MONTSERRAT'S SYMBOLS OF NATIONHOOD

THE MONTSERRAT FLAG

ITS MEANING

The flag of Montserrat is blue, with the flag of the United Kingdom (UK) in the upper hoist-side quadrant. Montserrat's coat of arms is centered in the outer half of the flag.

The flag of Montserrat was officially adopted in 1962.

MONTSERRAT'S COAT OF ARMS

ITS MEANING

The coat of arms dates from 1909, and shows a woman dressed in green, holding a black cross and yellow harp. The cross symbolizes Christianity. The harp and woman recall Irish immigrants  who settled on the island in 1632.

MONTSERRAT'S NATIONAL ANTHEM

NOTES

The official anthem of this British dependency in the Caribbean is "God Save the Queen."

God save our gracious Queen!

Long live our noble Queen!

God save the Queen!

Send her victorious,

Happy and glorious,

Long to reign over us,

God save the Queen.

An additional verse is occasionally sung:

Thy choicest gifts in store

On her be pleased to pour,

Long may she reign.

May she defend our laws,

And give us ever cause,

To sing with heart and voice,

God save the Queen.
